Barrie Risman is widely regarded as one of Canada’s most highly skilled yoga educators, teacher–trainers and mentors. Her best-selling book, Evolving Your Yoga: Ten Principles for Enlightened Practice, is a guide for teachers and continuing students to deepen, expand, and integrate the benefits of yoga in their lives. She’s the creator of The Skillful Yogi, an online practice and study community of yoga students and teachers from around the globe.

Barrie is well known for her ability to convey the essence of the wisdom teachings of yoga with exceptional clarity, insight, and relevance to students of all levels and from all walks of life. She teaches with a remarkable combination of rigor and challenge balanced with sensitivity, humor, and compassion.

Her events weave together the technical precision of refined alignment-based practice with an ever-present awareness of the great wisdom of yoga philosophy distilled from decades of intensive study and practice.

Barrie is the proud Co-creator and former Co-director of the World Spine Care Yoga Project, whose mission is to bring the benefits of posture, breathing and mindfulness as a tool for pain management and active self care to low mobility populations around the world.

It is both remarkable and tricky. Yet, it's a notion, a paradox really, that's at the heart of many of the most important considerations for our practice, including: What is right effort? What does it mean to create balance? How does yoga help us not only to nurture our spiritual aspirations but also to function well in all areas of our lives? We'll explore all this and more in this session that includes asana practice, guided meditation, journaling, and group discussion.

Homecoming: The Yoga of Self-Honouring

Our relationship with ourselves is the axis of a fulfilling life. Yoga is at its most transformational when we use it as a way to restore, nurture, and expand a loving, compassionate relationship with ourselves to reclaim our inherent worthiness and build a healthy sense of self-esteem. When we do this, our practice becomes a great ally in our lives, our mat becomes like a trusted friend - a place where we're able to meet ourselves exactly where we are and be welcomed with support, acceptance, encouragement, and love. We do this not only for ourselves, but also because doing so changes the way we see others, and how we interact with the world around us. In this workshop we will practice a guided visualization to build an inner sanctuary, and do some journaling about what it would look like for us to put ourselves in the center of our lives and conclude with group sharing and discussion about takeaways.

Discover the liberating power of backbends in this foray into deeper back-bending poses. We'll explore key aspects of upper body alignment and the deeper significance of freeing the chest, neck, and shoulders. Clear technical points, key actions, pose modifications for participants and principles for healthy alignment will be included throughout each step of the workshop. Our sequence is designed to open your shoulders and neck so you can move deeper into backbends with safe and empowering upper-body alignment.
