YogaTheory™: How the old way of practicing is leaving us broken and how yoga therapy can help to change that.

Kim McNeil - TH1MCN

Our bodies tell a story. Like a bad poker face, they give away our habits with how they move--or don't move. If we look, listen and feel for the tell, we can find out a lot of information about how to improve how we move and, ultimately, how to avoid injury. Yoga is a research-backed practice that can help manage and reduce pain, improve a person's mobility and stability, lower blood pressure, lower heart rate, improve sleep and boost mood. With a little effort, an open mind and a new way of approaching your practice, you can reap the benefits of yoga as a therapy. In this class, you'll learn ways to easily incorporate yoga therapy into your practice so you can break old movement habits and compensations, reduce pain that has been nagging you for years and improve your overall mental and physical health. Specifically, you'll be taught how some of the most-common teaching cues are hurting us and how we can cue differently to keep our students safer. You'll learn how doing less to move into and out of a pose can offer us more in the long run in terms of improved strength, mobility and flexibility. Call it easy yoga. Heck, call it lazy yoga! But discover it for what it is: safe yoga.

Michael Lee - TH1MLE

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves._ - Buddha We all want to be fulfilled and do something with meaning. We all search for the life that will make us happy. As a recent Stanford Research project concluded: "The quest for meaning is a key part of what makes us human." Additional findings indicate that when an individual experiences meaningfulness they will more easily adapt to stress, more effectively set and attain life goals, experience less anxiety, and experience better physical health and general well-being. So how do we find that? In this workshop, you will learn how your yoga practice can support you in creating a more meaningful and fulfilling life when the practice includes certain important elements. Michael will lead a yoga class experience bringing together embodied mindful awareness and the teachings of the Buddha while referencing neuroscience research. You will explore the evolution of yoga from the vedas to the Buddha and to modern psychology and neuroscience. What you learn here will be an introduction to body-mind approaches to yoga therapy that can support you in attaining and maintaining your everyday dharma as a complement to other approaches. Heart Equity: Using Our Stories and the Breath to Cultivate Community

Our yoga practice and our personal, lived experiences can be essential to many of our self-care practices, and it can also begin to awaken our bodies in ways that make us more aware both within and beyond the physical body. Making connections between what the body experiences and the ways in which our mind processes and understands issues surrounding inequality and exclusion is essential for any yoga teacher who wants to be more inclusive. In addition, this intensive provides space for yoga teachers and students who are curious about how inclusion can truly be experienced within a yoga class that is deliberate, aware and grounded in compassion. Inspired by her work with Yoga, Literature, and Art Camp for Teen Girls at Spelman College founded by Chelsea in 2013, this 6-hour experience uses asana, dialogue, journaling, poetry and meditation to attune to our individual and collective purpose(s) while in community with others. This workshop includes a dharma talk, gentle or restorative practice, guided journaling and/or poetry experience (individual and collective), meditation and Yoga Nidra with aromatherapy. This course is perfect for anyone who works with, is a part of, or an ally to vulnerable or marginalized communities and is interested in understanding yoga in relationship with the work you do, or want to do in your community. This intensive is designed to: (1) Access yoga as a way to practice self-care. (2) Cultivate community relationships while engaging yoga. (3) Demonstrate how yoga and literature together can be used as a tool for cultivating an empowered voice for yourself and your students. Please bring: • Journal or notebook • Pen/pencil • One personal item that is meaningful to you and that you feel comfortable speaking to within the group.

Somatically, we store these experiences in our body and tissues, and many of the movements of typical yoga practice_such as backbends and hip openers_can unexpectedly trigger these repressed memories and emotions. Join Lisa to learn why, in a trauma-informed practice, we must be cognizant of the space, the poses, our adjustments and, most importantly, our language. Through understanding these concepts, you can work towards creating a safe and open environment for healing and release in your students and clients. This workshop shares the latest scientifc research on trauma, including the polyvagal theory and the social nervous system, and combines it to traditional Eastern methods of yoga to provide a trauma-informed yoga practice that anyone can do. The science of trauma and what is happening within the body from stored trauma and/or PTSD is an integral missing link in the majority of 200-hour-based yoga education. Considering that many of our students come to yoga for healing, providing a safe and nurturing space is paramount. Teaching our teachers how to both prevent and handle triggers (and both are needed) will keep our students coming back and continue to promote yoga as the healing mechanism we know it to be. By attending this workshop, attendees will learn how the body stores and processes trauma; how to avoid triggers in class, handle triggers when they happen and safely use yoga as a healing mechanism to release stored trauma from the body.

Calm: How meditation and gratitude can help your mood and reduce stress.

Kim McNeil - SA1MCN

Mood disorders affect the entire body and mind. Physical symptoms include fatigue, stomach issues, muscle and joint pain. Mood disorders are one of the most common mental illnesses in Canada. Although many suggest meditation, yoga and positive thinking are magical solutions to grief and pain, Kim disagrees. As a yoga therapist, she believes in the research-backed benefits of meditation and yoga. Kim looks at meditation and yoga as two pieces in one's mental health toolbox to help manage stress, anxiety and mood disorders, and ultimately help one live a happier, healthier life, because research has shown the benefits of a meditation practice to those with stress, anxiety and depression. Gratitude is an especially powerful technique that can easily become part of your daily routine. Through the use of great story telling, teaching experience and personal experience, Kim will teach participants about the fundamentals of gratitude meditation and guide students through a practice. Participants will learn how gratitude meditation can help them maintain good mental health. A story about grief and whisky is included.

Five Element Qigong

Matthew Cohen - SU7COH

The ancient Chinese scholars believe that the universe consists of five basic elements, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. The Five Element Qigong works with these basic elements. Specific movements relate to a particular element, which in turn relates to various organs in the body. Each element also refers to a particular season. For example, Metal, the element of the fall season, is related to the lungs and large intestine. In the Five Element Qigong, the Metal element movement of “Great Hawk Spreads Its Wings” is practiced to heal and strengthen the organs related to the element. The Five Element Qigong practice is done in alternating intervals of standing poses and walking meditation. Each sacred gesture is followed by a few minutes of walking, the purpose of which is to learn to transition smoothly from the sacred to secular everyday activities so that over time, there’s no difference between a meditative practice and the daily life.
