Christine will share her 18+ years of teaching, being a yoga student, and training yoga teachers through this teacher’s intensive comprising three components: lecture; yoga practice, led by Christine to demonstrate the principles covered; and group assignment to create and present a short sequence.

YogaTheory™: Pure movement and mindfulness approach to practicing yoga to improve mobility, reduce pain, and avoid injury.

Kim McNeil - TH1MCN

Do you have pain? Are you recovering from an injury? Have you found little relief from your yoga practice, or, even worse, that yoga has made your symptoms worse? Would you like to learn more about how to keep you and your students safe in yoga poses? Our bodies tell a story. Like a bad poker face, they give away our habits and preferences for how we like to move, or not move. If we look, listen, and feel for the tell, we can discover information about how to improve the quality of our movements and avoid injury. With a little patience, an open mind, and a new approach to your practice, you can use less effort in your poses to ultimately move better. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to easily incorporate yoga therapy into your practice so you can break old movement habits and compensations, reduce pain that has been nagging you for years, and improve your overall physical health. We’ll go over some of the most common teaching cues that are hurting instead of helping us, and how we can cue differently to keep our students safer. You’ll learn how going into and out of a pose is more important than what you look like in a pose. Finally, we’ll explore how doing less can offer us more in the long run in terms of improved strength, mobility, and flexibility. Call it easy yoga. Heck, call it lazy yoga.

The workshop will blend guided practice sessions with individual inquiry and the presentation of relevant anatomical information.

During this intensive, learn the yoga philosophy behind the five elements and practice an inspiring sequence of alignment-based, therapeutic postures that brings a balance of strength, flexibility, and balance. When we have an awareness of how each of our Ten Bodies function and how they work together in an integrated way, we can use Kundalini Yoga to balance them for optimal performance. Learn and experience what the "Ten Bodies" are, how they interact with each other, and how to direct your mind to expand your self-awareness to change the way you interact in the world and with others

Rock Solid Booty/Full on Flow: Mainstream Asana has Forgotten our Asana

Jennifer Pike - TH6PIK

As instructors we know our students are short on time and high on the need to create as much physical impact during their time with you on their mat. This very specific practice creates more strength-based body awareness and balance for those who often choose deep stretch/unwind–style classes that offer no base of fundamental strength and support to their bodies. This practice is ideal for two types of students: the one whose entire posterior chain lies asleep, over-lengthened, and weak from hours sitting in a car, a chair, or standing too long; or the one whose strength-based program is entirely too focused on the anterior chain/front body with a yoga practice that has seen one too many forward folds. We strive to release the muscles of our low back, glutes, and hamstrings without realizing that they are in fact tight due to weakness; stiff due to stagnation and lack of proper movement, and in desperate need of being recruited, rehabbed and reminded of how strong they truly are. Your Posterior Chain is quite literally what is holding you up.

Integrating Functional Movements for Effective Yoga

Kathryn Flynn - TH6FLY

Vinyasa means "to place specifically," but the flowing qualities of the practice imply difficulty. Motion is lotion for the body, but tricky transitions put certain practices beyond many students. This workshop shows you how you can bring fluidity, strength, and healing to any practice for an empowering experience. Informed by an inclusive teaching methodology and mobility practices, beginners will have a sufficiently challenging yet kind experience, and arm balancers will leave satisfied and safe. The concepts we work with are scalable, making them a truly all-levels set of skills and essential information for students and teachers to get the most out of their practice.

Yoga and Divorce: How the Yamas and Niyamas Will Get You Through the Trickiest Days of Your Life

Marcy Barbaro - TH6BAR

We all know how healing it can be to get on the mat, turn inward, and move our bodies during difficult times. It’s off the mat, however, that we can get into trouble; lashing out at others, judging quickly, and believing the pain we are in will be ever-lasting. The end of a trusted relationship, such as a marriage separation or divorce, often leaves us bewildered, insecure, rejected, and nervous about the future. Luckily, there is help in yoga. The Yamas and Niyamas are set of guides built into our Eight-limbed Yogic Path, that when followed, can help us manage this difficult time with dignity and respect for others and the self. In this lecture and workshop, we will begin with an overview of the concepts that make up these yoga ethics, and then look at how they can be applied practically. Be prepared to journal, to share, and to be honest with yourself about how you could do better as you handle this time of massive change.

Re-imagining Alignment

Leslie Kaminoff - FR1KAM

This highly interactive workshop relies on students to bring questions about their own asana practice and teaching language. Leslie will promote an experimental, experiential atmosphere of inquiry regarding the teaching of alignment, safety and effective cueing of asana. The session begins with an historical and anatomical perspective on the subject and functional definition of alignment. Then, an exploration of the uniqueness of human structure will lead to the understanding that "asanas don’t have alignment – people have alignment." Later, researchers at Rice University, attempting to help him understand his experience, concluded it was a sankalpa samadhi experience as described in the ancient yogic texts. What were the conditions that Mitchell engaged to set up such a moment regardless of where he happened to be? Can we create similar "awakening moments" right here on earth in our yoga practice? If so, what are the important elements we need to have in place to do so? This workshop will inform as well as provide take-home practices for engaging yoga as a process of transformation.

As many yoga practitioners have discovered going to end range in poses can lead to instability, hyper-mobility, pain and injury. Using the Body Loop in yoga poses provides resistance and support at the end range encouraging more muscle activation, recruitment and joint stability. The Body Loop trains more strength into yoga postures - rather than doing poses passively using the Body Loop encourages a dynamic relationship with the pose. This challenge is perfect for beginners and helps long time practitioners who have become flexible, find the strength they need to stabilize.

Full System Yoga Detox

J-P Tamblyn-Sabo - SA1JPT

Our yoga practice is an opportunity to clear some of the toxicity that we absorb and retain as a result of living in an ever-more physically, energetically, emotionally, and environmentally hazardous world. Yoga is one of our best defences for combatting the stress and disease that can result from this toxic build-up. But the "detox potential" of yoga isn't just a matter of sweating, breathing, and doing twisting poses. Addressing only the physical (or the mental or the emotional) and not the entire ecosystem means that we might be missing the part of ourselves that needs to be cleansed the most! In this session, discover a simple, comprehensive approach to detoxing with yoga on five levels: physical, mental, energetic, behavioural, and emotional. Leave feeling refreshed, lighter, energetic and inspired, and with the tools to continue your detoxification practice in the days, months and years ahead.

Teaching Trauma-Informed Yoga : Being Trauma-Sensitive, Creating a Healing Practice

Lisa Greenbaum - SA1GRE

We all have our stories, and for some people they involve traumatic chapters of abuse or neglect. Join Lisa to learn why, in a trauma-informed practice, we must be cognizant of the space, the poses, our adjustments and, most importantly, our language. Through understanding these concepts, you can work towards creating a safe and open environment for healing and release in your students and clients. This workshop shares the latest scientific research on trauma, including the polyvagal theory and the social nervous system, and combines it with Eastern traditional methods of Yoga to provide a trauma-informed Yoga practice that anyone can do.

My belief is that the Path of Yoga is the journey towards our greatest possible experience of health, wellness, and vitality, and that every yoga practice should move us further along that path (without "detours" / i.e. injuries!). This workshop provides insights and tools to ensure that you are able to support that greater journey in every yoga class you take, and to feel 100% comfortable within the practice that serves you in the moment, whether the exercises offered feel perfectly within your comfort zone, or just a little beyond what feels appropriate on the day, or more for people without actual bones or pain receptors. Pleasure, Sensuality, Desire, and Emotions are some of the superpowers of the Sacral Chakra. We are so driven in our fast-paced world that many women's yoga practices have become goal-oriented, linear, and devoid of feeling. The results? Injury, rigidity, and feeling unfulfilled and disconnected to our feminine body. Many of us have lost connection to the power of our second chakra, our centre for pleasure and sensuality. In this workshop, we will dive in deep by discussing the inherent wisdom of this energy centre. We'll follow with an embodied practice that is devoted to the essence of second chakra—rippling, intuitive movement, desire, pleasure, and more. Expect to experience your yoga practice in an entirely new way, one that will leave you feeling vibrant, sexy, and free!

Kundalini Yoga and Healing Trauma

All Levels, Teacher Training, Therapy

Sat Dharam Kaur - SA3SDK

The experience of a traumatic event can result in a cruel sentence—the past replays itself, constantly hijacking one’s capacity to enjoy the present. The past cannot be fixed; we cannot go back and change what happened. The real trauma is that we lose the connection to ourselves—to our own curiosity, joy, aliveness, imagination, responsiveness and spirit. Kundalini yoga, breathing exercises and meditation are powerful tools to help us regain the connection to our spirit, find safety within the body, and foster aliveness, flexibility, body-mind integration and joy. In this workshop you will learn to: • calm the disturbing emotions and physical sensations that are still present from the past • decrease the physiological arousal by activating the vagus nerve • turn down the volume of stress hormones • become skillful in witnessing body sensations and emotional states • develop a greter capacity to compassionately hold space for yourself, and to feel what's there • find a sense of freedom in your own body

Jennifer Pike - SA4PIK

If you truly want to kick-start your metabolism and get that internal fire-starter working for you and not against you, listen up! You need more lean muscle tissue, better sleep, and specific training practices. You also need to learn the proper strategies to fuel your body to not only optimize your training, but also heal your digestion, balance your hormones, and tap into your body’s metabolic fire without burning out your adrenals and wasting your energy. Did you know muscle burns about three times more calories than fat? As we age every day, our body loses more muscle mass and more easily gains body fat, especially visceral fat around our vital organs, increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, diabetes, inflammation, auto-immune disease, and hormonal havoc. The key is to fuel, train, and heal your body in a way that brings balance and harmony back to your most vital hormones and systems in your body. Then add a combination of targeted, strength-based moves to your yoga practice that will not only challenge your larger muscle groups, such as your chest, back, shoulders, and legs, but also your smaller, stabilizing, accessory muscles of these areas and your entire core. Be prepared to sweat your way through this eye-opening, life-changing workshop and practice!

Befriending the Dragon: Balancing Destructive Emotions

Matthew Cohen - SA4COH

"There can be no transforming of darkness into light and of apathy into movement without emotion." ~ Carl Jung Trauma is the birthplace of destructive emotions. Without proper recognition of these behavioral patterns, we can often regress in our emotional development. That regression becomes the inhibitor of living the lives for which we are intended. Emotions are not meant to be feared but rather to be understood, like markers of a wound that needs to be healed. Fear is a mile wide, but paper thin. By first coming to a place of greater emotional awareness, we can move through the fear, into acceptance, and, finally, begin to utilize the practices that can act as the salve to our emotional wounds. By using techniques from both Qigong and Yoga we will explore meditations, mudras, and other means by which to befriend the dragon that means us no harm.

This wisdom has sustained itself over time (perhaps proving even more important in modern life) as a guide for preserving, moving, and cultivating these vital substances and energies through lifestyle, diet, and movement. The first treasure, Jing, is considered the foundation of our health and well-being. Jing "essence" can be seen as responsible for our growth, development, and reproduction. Our Jing can be lost or built through various aspects of our lifestyle. Preserving this substance allows us to age more gracefully. Combining both dynamic and slow, integrated movements, we will explore movements that target specific organs systems responsible for storing and cultivating our Jing. Adjustments, Energetics, and Alignments of Yoga Postures: Through the Eye of a Healer

Matthew Cohen - SU5COH

There is language that needs to be learned when teaching alignment. This language is both spoken and unspoken, it is both with touch and without. As a teacher, you are never simply adjusting a posture, you are adjusting a person. People with their own stories, attachments, emotions, and pasts. It is essential to approach each student with great care and awareness. This intensive training fully explores the development of that awareness. I will teach how to trust your inner compass so that you can intuitively care for each individual student. You will learn how read body language, even when the student themselves may not be in touch with what their own body is saying. We will dive into teacher archetypes: The warrior, the sage, the visionary, and, ultimately, the healer as you learn how to lay hands on your students. We will also explore a variety of poses to understand the greater meaning within each posture. As we turn into a twist, it can act not only for detoxification, but also as a look into our pasts. As we practice inversions, we alter not only our physical perspective, but perhaps learn to see other aspects of life through a different lens. In a balance pose, we may explore the many balances and dances that come with life. This intensive is meant to help guide, prepare, and grow not only your personal practice but teach you how to gracefully communicate with your students to meet their needs as they commune with you on the mat. Matthew’s decades of yoga, bodywork, energetic study, and internal martial arts make him uniquely qualified to dive into the depths of each yoga posture from a multi-dimensional approach.

Moving our Qi "Vitality": The Three Treasures

Cathy Keenan - SU3KEE

Thousands of years ago, the ancient Chinese believed the secret to a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life depended on cultivating what they called The Three Treasures (Jing, Qi, and Shen), which can be understood as our Body, Breath, and Spirit. This wisdom has sustained itself over time (perhaps proving even more important in modern life) as a guide for preserving, moving, and cultivating these vital substances and energies through lifestyle, diet, and movement. The second treasure, Qi, is what gives us energy and vitality. We acquire this treasure through our breath and the foods we eat. A healthy body relies on a constant circulation of Qi which moves, warms and animates our body so that we may interact and experience a more fulfilling life. Combining both dynamic and slow, integrated movements, we will explore movements that target specific organs systems responsible for building and moving our Qi. FOR: beginners and teachers who want to learn more about this aspect of Chinese medicine and its applications in movement and modern life.

Cultivating our Shen "Spirit": The Three Treasures

Cathy Keenan - SU4KEE

Thousands of years ago, the ancient Chinese believed the secret to a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life depended on cultivating what they called The Three Treasures (Jing, Qi, and Shen), which can be understood as our Body, Breath, and Spirit. This wisdom has sustained itself over time (perhaps proving even more important in modern life) as a guide for preserving, moving, and cultivating these vital substances and energies through lifestyle, diet, and movement. The third (and perhaps most important) treasure is our Shen "spirit." We develop this treasure through our experiences in life. Often considered the mental aspect of who we are and what drives us in life, we can understand this treasure as our awareness and insight, and the connection to what gives our life purpose. Our Shen can be developed though our relationships and the skillful practices of self-development. Combining both dynamic and slow, integrated movements, we will explore movements that target the specific organ system responsible for housing and developing our Shen. FOR: beginners and teachers who want to learn more about this aspect of Chinese medicine and its applications in movement and modern life.
